Required: IELTS 7.0 in each skill (CLB 9) for max Express Entry language points; IELTS 8.0 in Listening and 7.5 in Speaking/Writing/Reading reaches CLB 10 (no extra CRS, but a buffer for spouse's claim).

Your prep plan
- 1
Audit your current band on a real practice essay
Write a full Task 2 essay under 40-minute exam conditions, then score it against the official band descriptors. Most candidates over-estimate themselves by 0.5-1.0 band. Don't skip this β every prep plan starts from your real baseline, not your hoped-for one.
- 2
Identify the single criterion holding you back
Writing Task 2 is scored on four equally-weighted criteria: Task Response, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range & Accuracy. You almost certainly score 7.0 on at least one already. Find the lowest of the four and target that, not all four at once.
- 3
Memorise three essay templates β opinion, discussion, problem-solution
These three account for ~80% of Task 2 prompts. Internalise a 4-paragraph structure (intro β 2 body paragraphs β conclusion) for each. The thinking time you save during the exam goes into precise vocabulary and grammar β exactly what moves you from 6.5 to 7.0.
- 4
Practice 3 essays per week with feedback
Volume without feedback teaches you to repeat your mistakes faster. Use AI feedback (or a tutor) to flag every Lexical Resource and Grammar issue. Most CLB 9 candidates need 8-12 weeks of weekly feedback to consistently hit 7.0.
- 5
Take the test once you're consistently scoring 7.0+ in mocks
Don't book the test until your last 5 mock essays all scored 7.0 or higher in Writing. The Express Entry process re-tests language every 24 months β paying for an early retake costs $300+ and 2 weeks. Confidence in mocks correlates strongly with exam-day delivery.
What a band 7+ answer looks like
Band 7 sample β Task 2 prompt: "Some people believe that children should be allowed to use mobile phones in school. Others disagree. Discuss both views and give your own opinion."
Body paragraph 1 excerpt: Proponents of mobile-phone use in schools argue that these devices are powerful learning tools that prepare students for the digital workplace. A student who can quickly verify a fact through a search engine, translate an unfamiliar word, or use a calculator app is developing the same research and problem-solving skills they will need in any modern career. Schools in countries such as South Korea have integrated tablets and smartphones directly into lessons, reporting measurable improvements in student engagement.
Examiner notes:Topic sentence is precise (band 7+). "Powerful learning tools that prepare students for the digital workplace" β collocation + cause-effect framing (Lexical Resource: 7). South Korea example is specific and relevant (Task Response: 7). One minor article error in the original ("the digital workplace") acceptable at band 7 β band 8 would have zero such errors.
Goal-specific tips
- βExpress Entry CRS rewards CLB 9 (Band 7.0) more than CLB 8 by ~+8 points per skill. Stretching from 6.5 to 7.0 in writing alone is often the highest-ROI 0.5 band you will ever earn.
- βProvincial Nominee Programs (PNP) often accept CLB 7 (Band 6.0) for skilled workers, but the federal Express Entry CRS still uses CLB 9 as the meaningful threshold. Plan for 7.0 even if your PNP only requires 6.0.
- βSpousal language scores can add up to 20 CRS points if your spouse hits CLB 7 in all four skills. Worth coordinating prep timelines if you're applying with a spouse.
- βIRCC accepts both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training for Express Entry β but General Training is dramatically easier in Reading. Take General Training unless you have a specific Academic requirement (e.g., a Canadian university also wants Academic).
- βTest results are valid for 24 months for Express Entry. Time your test 1-3 months before profile creation, not earlier β letting it expire in the pool is one of the most common reasons profiles get pulled.
